Rye’s Story: Learning Plastering and Planning for the Future

By Rye Kilburn

Why I Chose Leeds College of Building

I’ve always known I wanted to work in construction, and plastering is the trade that stood out to me the most. I didn’t fancy being stuck in a classroom all day—it’s just not for me. I prefer doing something hands-on, where I can actually see the progress I’m making.

Leeds College of Building felt like the right choice from the start. Compared to my local college, LCB had more options and a better setup for the course I was interested in. After coming along to an Open Day, I knew this was for me.

Getting Started was Simple

The application process was really straightforward. It was easy to fill in and submit, and the enrolment day wasn’t what I expected—it was a lot simpler. I thought I’d have to write loads about myself, but instead I was just given everything I needed to get going.

A Day in the Life at LCB

My day starts early—I’m up by half six. After a quick shower, I catch the train into Leeds and get to college just before nine. Then it’s straight into work. We’re usually given a task to get stuck into for an hour or so before a break.

I normally save my breakfast until break time. Then we head back down to the workshop for another session before lunch. Sometimes we pop into town—usually Maccies in Trinity—before heading back for more practical work in the afternoon.

Tuesdays are a bit different as the day is split between classroom theory and practical learning in the workshop. We spend three hours over two sessions learning the background knowledge, and then on Wednesdays we put it all into practice in the workshop. It’s a good mix and helps make sure we understand what we’re doing and why.

Being close to Leeds city centre is a bonus too—everything’s right there, and it gives you that bit of freedom and independence outside of college.

“I feel like I’m moving toward my career goals”

Why I Love It

My favourite part of the course is just learning the trade. There’s something really satisfying about seeing the plaster go on the wall and knowing you’re getting closer to where you want to be. Every time I’m working, I feel like I’m moving toward my career goals.

Looking Ahead

I’m starting to look into apprenticeships now. I’ve spoken to a few plasterers to see if anyone’s taking someone on, and I’d love to get some on-the-job experience. I haven’t had a work placement yet, but I’m actively searching—and I’m looking for a part-time job too.

Eventually, I’d like to go self-employed. That’s the route I think will give me the most freedom and the best chance to earn the most money.

The college is already helping me prepare for that. I’ve done a CV workshop with Declan, one of the Employability Officers, which helped me build up my confidence and understand how to present myself. If I ever need anything, I know I can go to Tim, my Progress Coach, or my tutor Mark—they’re both there to help.

My Advice for Future Students

If you’re thinking about construction, this is the best place to be. The course is practical, the tutors are supportive, and you’ll leave with real skills and a solid plan for the future.
